LANGUAGES

All students will develop the skills and confidence to consider themselves ‘global citizens’ who belong to a multicultural, mutually respectful world.   Students increase their cultural capital by building knowledge of other countries, their languages and cultures and as a result are more open to new experiences and have a more profound understanding of their own language and culture.

All students can broaden their abilities with life-long, linguistic skills. Along with learning new topics, reinforcing knowledge every lesson is the key aspect of learning a language: we give pupils plenty of opportunity to practise and therefore remember key vocabulary through each of the 4 skills of speaking, writing, listening and reading. This is the first step towards becoming independent as a language learner and therefore creative with the target language. 

The MFL department aims to promote a positive image of language learning in a lively and stimulating environment. The department also aims to develop the students’ self-confidence and self-esteem so that they are able to communicate effectively in the Target Language. All students should be made aware of the vast opportunities available to them if they have knowledge of a foreign language.

Our language learners will journey through the curriculum with a focus on the real purpose, benefit and enjoyment of language learning which will, in turn, support them when developing the strategies and the resilience needed to decipher meaning, improve their memory storage and recall, improve their conceptual understanding and problem-solve.
