At Walker Riverside Academy we continually strive to safeguard our students from being drawn into terrorism or any type of exploitation, being subjected to any type of exploitation or bullying. We, therefore, work closely with our local police and safeguarding organisations.

SAFEGUARDING POLICY

As part of the Tyne Coast Academy Trust, here at Walker Riverside Academy we adhere to both trust wide policy and our own internal safeguarding policy. We also adhere to Department for Education/ .Gov policy.

SAFEGUARDING INITIATIVES

VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS

Violence against Women and Girls (VAWG) is a term that addresses the issue of gender based violence. This can manifest itself in many ways that affect children of all ages, for example, through Domestic Violence, honour based violence, sexual exploitation, and so on.

 NIDAS – 0191 214 6501 

NIDAS (Newcastle Integrated Domestic Abuse Service) provides support to people experiencing Domestic Violence and Abuse in the city.


SERVICES:

Outreach: The outreach team works with individuals in a safe place to create safety and support plans.

Refuge: There is a new purpose built refuge for women and children to provide a safe place when moving from abusive relationships.

High Risk Victims: specialist services available to support individuals in achieving long –term safety.

Sexual violence: Independent Sexual Violence Advisors (ISVAs) provide crisis intervention and medium term support for individuals aged 16+ who have experienced SV, whether reported or not.

 THE ANGELOU CENTRE – 0191 226 0394 

The Angelou Centre is a service that specialises in holistic support for black and minority ethnic (BME) women.


SERVICES:

Support for survivors of violence and abuse: “We provide a comprehensive, holistic model of support for BME women, children and young survivors of domestic and sexual violence. We offer culturally and linguistically diverse advice, information and advocacy through case work; group support for women (Saheli) and children (Simba) as well as therapeutic care and counselling for women and children.”

Training and Employment Support: “We offer a wide range of courses, activities and support to help women to update and improve their skills and support them in their journey to work.”

Social and Creative activities: "Mahila Mandal the ‘aunties’ group for elders, Angelou Youth and Angelou Carers. BAM! SISTAHOOD! Project provides opportunities to explore creative and digital skills."

 RAPE CRISIS – 0191 222 0272 

Rape Crisis is a service for women and girls who have experienced any form of sexual violence.


SERVICES:

Phone/Email helpline: Confidential support available 18.00-20.30 Monday – Thursday and 11.00 -14.30 Friday.

Practical and Emotional Support: Support groups are ran to support women in person.

Counselling: referrals can be made to a counsellor.

 WEST END WOMEN'S AND GIRLS CENTRE – 0191 273 4942 

West End Women and Girls Centre is a registered charity established in the west end since 1981 which aims to support women and girls in the community.


SERVICES:

Safe Project: A domestic violence project which supports women through a multi-agency approach, helping them with legal advice and long-term safety. The project can also provide specialist support for those effected by honour based violence and forced marriage.

Group Work/Activities: The centre runs a number of sessions aimed at women, girls and families, which encourage socialisation and building skills, e.g. cooking/gardening.

 NEWCASTLE WOMEN'S AID – 0191 261 0504 

Established in 1975, Women’s Aid provide specialist Domestic Abuse services to women and children.


SERVICES:

Domestic Abuse Floating Support: DAFS can offer a flexible and structured package of support to women who have been affected by domestic abuse.1:1 and group work is offered, focusing on recovery – takes into account fluctuating needs.

The Freedom Programme: Our group programmes provide opportunities for women to recognise domestic abuse, its impacts and explore options so the process of recovery can begin. The Freedom Programme is an 11-week programme focusing on abusive behaviours used within abusive relationships.

The Recovery Toolkit: The Recovery Toolkit is a 12-week programme for women to help them recover from the psychological trauma of being in an abusive relationship.

Advice: Our Freephone Domestic Abuse Helpline is available Mon-Fri, 9.00 - 4.30pm

You can use the helpline if you have been affected by domestic abuse or if you are worried about someone you know. We also offer advice to the friends and family of anyone experiencing domestic abuse.

Awareness Raising in Education/Youth settings: Focusing on primary prevention, this community approach helps identify, prevent and reduce DV and give young people an awareness of the support available.


REPORTING CONCERNS

CYPS (Children and Young People's Service) can be contacted on 0191 2466913 should any family need emergency/crisis help/advice for a child when the Academy is closed.
